Nakamura-ryu Battodo – Traditional Japanese Sword Drawing Art
We are a full member branch of the International Batto-Do Federation, under the guidance of Dave Drawdy sensei, who is a director of the Capital Area Budokai and Dojocho of the Virginia Kenkonkai. Drawdy sensei is Nanadan (7th dan) Renshi in Nakamura Ryu Battodo and a Shibucho (branch chief) in the International Batto Do Federation.
Training:
Our branch emphasizes disciplined fundamentals, structured kata progression,
and safe - methodical tameshigiri practice!
This ensures students develop technical precision, mental focus, and respect for tradition.
We encourage steady, lifelong study rather than quick advancement, fostering character, etiquette, and responsibility alongside physical skill.
Through seminars, inter-dojo exchanges, and public demonstrations, we aim to preserve authentic Japanese sword culture while making it accessible to modern practitioners in South Africa.
This commitment strengthens community bonds and honors the legacy of our teachers past and present.
Origins of the Style:
Nakamura Taizaburō sensei was born in 1912 in Yamagata Prefecture. He resided in Tsurumi, Yokohama, where he presided over the International Iai-Battōdō Federation and taught battōdō for the Kakuseikai until his death in 2003.
Nakamura sensei was awarded
- 10th dan hanshi battōdō by the International Martial Arts Federation
- 7th dan kyoshi by the All Japan Kendō Federation
- 8th dan hanshi, Jukendō
- 8th dan hanshi, Tankendō
In 1973 he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure in recognition for his services in promoting the martial arts.
International Participation:
Our annual participation in the Nakamura Ryu Taikai in Tsurumi, Japan, is a highlight on our calendar.
- Batto, like iai, is a 'drawing sword' art that begins and ends with the sword in the saya.
- Nakamura Ryu grew from basic swordsmanship for military officers taught at the Toyama Military Academy in the late 1920's.
- It has deep roots in several koryu, or older styles.
- Emphasis is on focus and control, effective technique, and spirit.
